The Drake Devonshire in Prince Edward County
Posted: Apr 28 2015
Just a couple hours east of Toronto, the recently opened “Drake-by-the-lake” has all of the style and artful touches we have come to expect from The Drake Hotel, in a serene and stunning lakeside setting. Find out more from our recent visit!
Overlooking the shores of Lake Ontario, the Drake Devonshire’s beachfront property is the result of a two-year restoration project that turned a late 1800s foundry building into a stylish, rustic getaway with breathtaking views of the lake.
The hotel boasts 11 rooms plus two suites; a full-service dining room; private event spaces and an expansive patio area with deck, covered bar and fire pit for staying warm and cozy on even the chilliest of evenings.
On our recent visit to the Drake Devonshire, The Chic Canuck team was swooning over all the Canadiana touches as we noshed on beach-barbecued corn on the cob dressed with truffle butter. Yes, it blew our minds too.
As with Toronto’s Drake Hotel, art is not an afterthought at the Devonshire, it’s thoughtfully integrated into every aspect of the space – the murals painted onto the walls or the structure itself, and the hotel’s extensive permanent and rotating art collection brings pops of colour and modernity to the rural scene. Who said the country couldn’t be chic?
It’s the details that make the Devonshire special – a snippet of poetry by PEC local and world-renowned poet, Al Purdy, is placed in each of the guest rooms. Also in your room: Custom-crafted furniture with patterned upholstery, McAusland Wool Blankets hand-made in Atlantic Canada, marble and glass showers, wood floors, and of course all the technology one might need including free Wi-Fi, DVD and iPod listening libraries and Bluetooth Bose sound system. Choose from a selection of curated snacks and trays, and freshen up with Malin + Goetz toiletry products.
The hotel’s menu is seasonal, locally sourced and Canadian inspired. Chef Matt DeMille has put together a fun and original farm - and lake – to-table menu, with daily specials and community-focused meals a regular part of dining at the Dev.
Of course, being located right in the heart of Prince Edward County’s famous wine region, the wine selection is superb, with plenty of Ontario options including a house wine by Rosehall Run.
We fell in love with the Devonshire – the sound of the waves, the babbling brook, the smell of barbecue and Douglas firs, and the beautiful cozy spaces throughout.
Everywhere you go there is something to feast your eyes on, reminders that style, art and culture have a place in Canada’s rural settings, and that you can get away from the stress of the city without leaving behind its soul.
Rates start at $229. Reservation requests can be made at www.drakedevonshire.ca or by calling 1-844-898-3338. Dining is available for guests from 7:30 a.m. through midnight, every day.
We can’t wait to go back!
